A sociological essay published by Calmann-Lévy in 1967 (reissued by La Table Ronde). Ellul examines the bourgeois as a social type and argues that bourgeois values and ways of living, far from disappearing, were absorbed and transformed by modern technological society. The book belongs to the cluster of sociological essays of the 1960s that followed La Technique. It has not been translated into English.
