A study of what the New Testament teaches about the perseverance of believers and the possibility of falling away, developed from his Aberdeen doctoral thesis, 'Perseverance, Falling Away and Apostasy' (1963). It was published by Epworth Press in London in 1969, in a second edition by Bethany Fellowship in Minneapolis in 1974, and later reissued by Paternoster and by Wipf and Stock (2008). Marshall works through the relevant passages, including the warnings in Hebrews, and reaches a position in the Arminian tradition: the believer is kept by God's power, but the warnings against apostasy are real. A later edition added an epilogue setting out why he found that view to have fewer exegetical difficulties than the Calvinist one. The book remains one of the standard exegetical treatments of the question from a non-Calvinist evangelical.
