On the Sacraments
De Sacramentis is a collection of six homilies delivered by Ambrose of Milan to newly baptized Christians during Easter week, likely between 390 and 391. These mystagogical sermons were part of the ancient practice of explaining the deeper mysteries of baptism and Eucharist to those who had just undergone initiation at the Easter Vigil. Ambrose addressed converts who had completed their catechumenate and were now full members of the church, needing instruction in the sacred rites they had experienced but not yet fully understood.
Ambrose unfolds the meaning of Christian initiation through careful exposition of the baptismal liturgy and Eucharistic celebration as practiced in Milan. He explains the symbolism of the pre-baptismal rites, the significance of triple immersion in the name of the Trinity, and the post-baptismal anointing and foot-washing. His treatment of the Eucharist emphasizes the real transformation of bread and wine through the power of Christ's words, drawing parallels between the Eucharistic prayer and God's creative word in Genesis. Throughout, Ambrose weaves together scriptural typology, liturgical practice, and doctrinal instruction, showing how Old Testament prefigurations find their fulfillment in Christian sacraments. His approach is both pastoral and theological, grounding mysterious realities in the concrete experience of the liturgy while defending orthodox teaching about sacramental efficacy.
De Sacramentis remains valuable as one of our earliest detailed witnesses to fourth-century liturgical practice and sacramental theology. Ambrose's integration of biblical exegesis with ritual explanation influenced subsequent mystagogical traditions and provides insight into how the early church formed new Christians in the faith. Who should read this: liturgical scholars, students of patristic theology, and anyone interested in how the ancient church understood and celebrated the sacraments. This is not recreational reading but requires familiarity with early Christian worship and theological vocabulary.
