Sabbatical Journey: The Diary of His Final Year (Crossroad, 1998) is the journal Henri Nouwen kept during a sabbatical year from L'Arche Daybreak that began in September 1995. Freed from his pastoral duties to write, he travelled widely, visiting friends in North America and Europe, and recorded his days: his writing, his friendships, his prayer, his time with a trapeze troupe in Germany, and his reflections on the people and events he met. The diary ends in the summer of 1996, shortly before his death from a heart attack in the Netherlands in September of that year. It was published posthumously.
