Rome, Constantinople, Moscow
For For readers of East-West church history and Russian Orthodoxy; scholarly essays, not an introduction.
A collection of Meyendorff's essays, published by St Vladimir's Seminary Press in 1996, four years after his death, from published and unpublished material he had prepared shortly before he died (208 pages). The essays examine the estrangement between Eastern and Western Christianity and several attempts to heal the schism, the fall of Byzantium, and the emergence of Russia as a centre of Orthodox mission and thought. They include "Rome and Constantinople", "Two Visions of the Church: East and West on the Eve of Modern Times", "Was There an Encounter Between East and West at Florence?" and "Was There Ever a 'Third Rome'?", a study of Eastern patristic thought in John Scotus Eriugena, and a closing essay on Russian theological thought in modern times.
