The first part of the introduction to the Christian ethics Ellul planned, published by Labor et Fides in Geneva in 1964 under the subtitle Recherches éthiques pour les chrétiens: Introduction (première partie). Ellul argues, in the line of Karl Barth, that morality as a human system is a product of the fall, and that Christian ethics cannot be another moral code but must begin from God's free grace and command. Its title is taken from Philippians 2:13. It was translated by C. Edward Hopkin as To Will and to Do (Pilgrim Press, 1969) and newly by Jacob Marques Rollison as volume one of To Will & to Do (2020). The later parts of the introduction were published only in 2018, as Les sources de l'éthique chrétienne.
