Peterson's first book, published by John Knox Press in 1976 while he was pastor of Christ Our King Presbyterian Church in Bel Air, Maryland. Written for parents, it treats the years of adolescence as a time when parents as well as children are called to grow in Christ, rather than as a problem to be managed. It was reissued by Revell in 1987 as Growing Up with Your Teenager, and by Eerdmans in 1994, with an added chapter, as Like Dew Your Youth: Growing Up with Your Teenager, the title under which it is now usually found. It is the one book of his addressed to family life.
