Exploring New Religious Movements
For For researchers in African and other new religious movements and in mission studies; not for general readers.
A volume of essays in honour of Harold W. Turner (1911–2002), the Presbyterian missionary scholar who taught in Sierra Leone and Nigeria and did much to define new religious movements, especially the independent churches of Africa, as a field of study. It was edited by Andrew Walls and Wilbert R. Shenk and published by Mission Focus in Elkhart, Indiana, in 1990 (215 pages, with a portrait of Turner). The contents include a tribute to Turner by Walls, a chapter by Lamin Sanneh on African religious heritage, a chapter by Walter Hollenweger on indigenous churches, a chapter by Shenk on what the study of new religious movements means for missiology, and a bibliography of Turner's writings. Walls and Turner had both taught in West Africa, and Walls returned to Turner's work in an essay reprinted in Crossing Cultural Frontiers.
