An English edition of a Russian anthology on inner prayer compiled by Igumen Chariton of the Valamo monastery, translated by E. Kadloubovsky and E. M. Palmer and published by Faber and Faber in 1966, edited and introduced by Timothy Ware (as he then was, the year he was ordained). It gathers short passages from nineteenth-century Russian teachers on prayer of the heart and the Jesus Prayer. Ware's editorial work and introduction are his part in the book; the anthology itself is Chariton's. It is one of the books through which the Russian hesychast tradition reached English readers before the full Philokalia translation began.
