Self-Portrait in Letters, 1916–1942
For For readers who want Stein in her own letters, from philosophy to Carmel to the deportations; not a book to read straight through first.
Stein's letters from 1916 to 1942, edited by Lucy Gelber and Romaeus Leuven and published in two parts as volumes VIII (1916–1934, published 1976) and IX (1934–1942, 1977) of Edith Steins Werke. They run from her years as Husserl's assistant through her teaching at Speyer and Münster to the Carmels of Cologne and Echt and the last notes before her death in 1942. A smaller selection, Briefauslese 1917–1942, had appeared in 1967. Josephine Koeppel's English selection is Self-Portrait in Letters, 1916–1942, volume 5 of the Collected Works of Edith Stein (ICS, 1993). The critical edition re-edits the letters in three volumes, the third being her letters to Roman Ingarden, which are listed separately here.
