Peter Maurin: Apostle to the World
For For readers who want Day's own portrait of Peter Maurin, the teacher behind the Catholic Worker; not an introduction to Day herself.
Peter Maurin: Apostle to the World is Dorothy Day's biography of Peter Maurin, the French-born itinerant thinker with whom she founded the Catholic Worker in 1933 and whom she presents as her teacher. Day left the book as an unpublished manuscript; it was edited and annotated by the historian Francis J. Sicius and published by Orbis Books in 2004, with his introductions and commentary added to each chapter. The chapters follow Maurin's early life, his years in Canada, his meeting with Day and the founding of the movement, then his program: clarification of thought, houses of hospitality and the "green revolution" of farming communes, with a chapter on his digests and a closing portrait of him as a good man. Day intended it as a tribute, and suggested Maurin might one day be counted among the saints.
