A book of short paradoxes and aphorisms on faith, the Church, the spiritual life and the modern world, first published in Paris in 1946 (Éditions du Livre français). De Lubac collected such reflections throughout his life; this first gathering was followed by Nouveaux paradoxes (1955), and the two were united in a single volume in 1959. The English translation by Paul Simon and Sadie Kreilkamp appeared in 1948 (Fides) and was reprinted in Paradoxes of Faith (Ignatius Press, 1987).
