Jewish and Christian Self-Definition, Volume 1: The Shaping of Christianity in the Second and Third Centuries
For For researchers in early Christianity who want specialist essays on how the church defined itself; a scholarly symposium, not a narrative history.
The first of three volumes produced by a research project at McMaster University on normative self-definition in Judaism and Christianity, funded by a major Canada Council grant won by Sanders and his McMaster colleagues Albert Baumgarten, Alan Mendelson and Ben F. Meyer. It was published by SCM Press and Fortress Press in 1980, with Sanders as editor. The volume gathers papers by several scholars on how Christianity in the second and third centuries came to define itself and the boundaries of orthodoxy, the period in which the church dealt with Gnosticism and other movements and settled on norms of belief and practice.
