The Religious Philosophy of Kant from the Critique of Pure Reason to Religion within the Limits of Reason Alone
For For students of Kant and of Schweitzer's intellectual beginnings; not for a reader looking for his theology of Jesus or his ethics, which came later.
Schweitzer's doctoral dissertation in philosophy at the University of Strasbourg, printed in 1899 when he was twenty-four. It traces Kant's philosophy of religion through his writings from the Critique of Pure Reason to Religion within the Limits of Reason Alone, asking how far the religious ideas of the later works follow from the critical method of the first. It is a close, technical reading of Kant's texts rather than a general account of his thought, and it is Schweitzer's first book of philosophy. The questions it raises, about how ethical conviction relates to a theory of the world, return in his philosophy of civilization twenty years later. No English translation is known to this pass.
