A short essay on the solitary vocation, hand-printed "pro manuscripto" by Victor Hammer's Stamperia del Santuccio in Lexington, Kentucky, in 1960 (21 pages). It is one of several Merton texts the Hammers printed by hand, and one of his central statements on solitude in the years before he moved to his hermitage.
