The Living Reminder
For For pastors, chaplains and those who train them; not for general readers looking for a devotional book.
The Living Reminder: Service and Prayer in Memory of Jesus Christ (Seabury, 1977) is the third of Henri Nouwen's early books on ministry, after Creative Ministry and The Wounded Healer. Its central image is the minister as a living reminder of Jesus Christ, whose service is to keep the memory of Christ alive among people. Nouwen develops this through the classical pastoral tasks of healing, sustaining and guiding, asking how each can be understood as a work of remembering, and he insists that ministers can only remind others of God if they themselves live in prayer and solitude. It was later reissued in the omnibus Ministry and Spirituality.
