The Tyndale Old Testament Lecture for 1947, delivered on 30 December 1947 at The Hayes, Swanwick, at a joint meeting of the Tyndale Fellowship for Biblical Research and the Inter-Varsity Fellowship's Theological Students' Fellowship, and published by the Tyndale Press as a 28-page booklet; Bruce was then head of the new Department of Biblical History and Literature at Sheffield. The lecture surveys the biblical references to the Hittites, the modern rediscovery of the Hittites, the Hittite empire and the later Hittite kingdoms of Syria, then examines the biblical data in that light, with a section asking whether 'Tidal king of nations' in Genesis 14 was a Hittite king. Bruce notes that he first studied Hittitology in Vienna in 1934-35.
